きのうたくさんの日本語のクラスにいる友だちは私のアパートに行きました。
たのしすぎました。

私は日本語の友達とアパートに行く時の前にリースグリルにばんごはんを食べに来た。私はハバッチを食べたことがなかったから、それを食べた。すごくおいしいと思った。
それから、十時ごろ友達は私のアパートに来た。私のアパートの一階でＤＤＲをしたりクーッキを食べたりしたよ。二階ではゲイムをしたりおどったりしたから、たのしかったよ。

みんさんは午前六時まで私のアパートであそんだと思いますが、私は早くねたので、ちょっとわかりません。。。
次のパーティもインバイトをしましょうか？

私のスピーチ

こんにちわみなさん、
下に私のスピーチがありますから、聞いてください！

いい事：I did my best to include challenging vocabulary and grammar to direct my speech towards the audience. I also think the topic was very practical because it is something that is practical for everyone.
わるい事：Despite that I practiced my speech, it was not very fluent, especially in the beginning. I think it was because being in front of a audience threw me off more than I thought it would. Pronunciation-wise, I think I needed to enunciate more because I often find myself getting used to saying certain things the wrong way. Hopefully, I didn't do that too much in the speech. In addition, Sato-sensee commented that I should add more personal experience, but I found that it was hard to talk about so much in a short amount of time.

みなさん、今しゅうは友だちのスピーチについて書いていますね。私のブログとスピーチのパートナーはおも白い話をします。

ハマさんはともだちに会うのや友だちを作るについて書きました。ハマさんはたくさんのしつもんを聞きますから、スピーチはとてもおも白いと思います。「どうして友だちは友だちですか」や「どうしてもう会った人にあいましたか」と聞きました。ハマさんは大学の前に日本語のじゅぎょうをとるつもりじゃありませんでしたが、大学の時日本語のクラスをとりましたから、いい友だちに会いました。

マッカーティさんは面白い旅行について書きました。本との話じゃないと思いますが、とてもたのしいです。まず、マッカーティさんはあにに会いに中国に行きました。それから、中国でマラシヤに住んでいる人に会いましたから、マラシヤにあそびに行きました。でも、おかあさんとおとうさんはその旅行についてしっていません！

このごろ私はお金をあまり持っていませんから、旅行をあまりしませんが、今年のなつーしゅう間カリフォニアに住んでいるしん友に会ったりうみのそばにあそびに行ったりするつもりです。私は外国を五つに文かを見に行ったことが有りますが、アメリカの西に行ったことが有りません。旅行をするのが高くなりましたが、カリフォニアでおみやげやたべものを買いたいですから、カリフォニアに行く時の前にお金をたくさんつかわないつもりです。だから、私はみんなさんに旅行のアドバイスをおしえます。

旅行をする日の二十四日の前に買うきっぷが一ばんやすいですから、私はよくインターネットできっぷを買います。人々がまっている売てんの前にまちませんから、インターネットできっぷを買うほうがくう行できっぷを買うよりはやいです。くう行はひ行きのえきです。

私の家からダレス国さいくう行まで車で十分ぐらいかかりますから、とてもべんりで、かんたんですが、私はよくくう行にはやく行きます。そして、一人旅はちょっとさびしいやつまらないですから、ひ行きにのる時の前にざっしを買ったり食べものを持って行ったりします。やすいびんの中で時々食事が有りませんから、おか子を持って行くのがいいと思います。

でも、にもつをたくさん持って行くのがよくないと思います。人々はかいさつの前にたくさんまったりにもつの有りょうをはらったりしたがっていません。ひ行きを出る時の後で大きいにもつはひ行きの下に有りますから、大へんです。だから、大てい小さいにもつを二つだけ持って行くのが一ばんべんりだと思います。

けいけん

私の生かつはノーマル(normal)ですから、おも白いけいけんが少ないあります。でも、子どもの時に私のしん友は私の近所に住んでいました。しん友は大きくてちゃいろいいぬと小さくてくろいねこをかいました。私はねこといぬはよくけんかしると聞きましたが、二つは一しょにあそんだりねたりしましたから、おも白いと思いました。私の友だちのいぬとねこはすごくかわかった、私もいぬをかいたかったですが、父母はいぬはいぬがあまり好きじゃありませんでしたから、いぬをかってはいけませんでした。でも、私は今子どもじゃありませんから、ねこかいぬをかってもいいです。だから、私は先月いもうとといぬのみせにいぬを見に行きました。そして、みせの前のつくえで私の子どもの時のしん友ははたらきっていました。私は十年まえから会いませんでしたから、びっくりでしたよ。私はいぬを買いませんでしたが、友だちと子どもの時の話をして生かつについて話しましたから、たのしかったです。おも白いけいけんですね。ちょっとコインシデンス(coincidence)ですね。
今私は友だちの電話ばんごうがありますから、よく電話をかけるつもりです。

Mixed Class

I thought our mixed kaiwa session was a great way to change up our routine. Since we are always with our own class, we've gotten used to the way people speak and can expect certain styles when partnering within our class. It was great that Kawai-sensee switched us up so that we can talk to people from different classes. I got to listen and speak with people I never otherwise would get a chance to and I learned alot but also had a lot more fun since there is a lot of variety. I actually did not find it awkward at all. It's a little harder since we don't regularly switch everything up but I think that kaiwa session is the best time to try something like this. I realized that any one person doesn't know everything but each person can come up with something creative. When Kawai-sensee called on certain people, I was surprised by some of the challenging and unique material we came up with. Also, having both Sato and Kawai sensee walking around and helping develop challenging kaiwa was nice because sometimes in class, we don't get as much individual attention since the sensee talks with one group for a while and may not get around to everyone.
One thing that I noticed was that certain classes were also crowded but since it was a mix of people, it didnt seem like there were too many. I hope we do another mix session because it takes away from the monotony of our schedule.
Furthermore, I am very glad Sato-sensee took our thoughts into account about our general Japanese schedule. Being able to turn in our homework in the manner we do now has been helpful but I also realize that I really need to be more cautious and make sure I dont make careless mistakes because those are costing me points. The quiz schedule is also helpful although last week, I studied for the vocab 3 quiz instead of the kanji quiz because I didnt realize that we had switched the order... oh well, I learned my lesson so I will pay attention now!
Yesterday's test- was much more difficult than I anticipated. It felt rushed even though I thought I was prepared. I was surprised at the Kasajizou story even though I read it multiple times. I really need to focus on writing quickly and efficiently on the tests. Renshuu!!!

本当にすみません

みなさん！
私はたくさんの時間ブログで書かなかったから、本当にすみませんよ。私はいい学生じゃないね！私は毎しゅうブログでかくつもりだったけど、ほかの日本語のしゅくだいとほかのクラスのしゅくだいもあったから、ブログをわすれた。それから、はる休みに家に帰ったから、買いものをして、しゅくだいをあまりしらなかったよ。
はる休みにべつに何もしらなかったよ。母をてつだって、家ぞくとたくさんあそんだ。私は来しゅうまつまた帰る。私は来しゅうまつはイースターだと思ったから、今しゅうまつ家に帰らなかった。今しゅうとてもいそがしいけど、家ぞくとあそぶのをたのしみにしているよ。父母は私が来るのをしらないから、びっくりだよ。
ブログで書くのがちょっと大へんだけど、今からがんばるよ！！

月曜日だい八かをはじめまるよね。だい七かはどうでしたか。ちょっと大へんでしたね。でも。。私はテストのまえの日にたくさんべんきょうをしましたから、テストはあまり大へんじゃありませんでした。
今しゅう、私はとてもいそがしい！火曜日にけいざいのテストが一つある。それから、水曜日と木曜日にせいじとしょうぎょうの作文をかう。もちろん、火曜日と水曜日にアルバイトをするよ。
私は今元気じゃないから、つかれているけど、としょかんでけいざいをべんきょうする。それから、八時にミーティングがある。つまらないね。

すこしはやいが、私は今しゅうとてもいぞがしいから、今ブログをきいている。私はあした十時の日本語のクラスにいく。それから、金曜日にはクラスをやすむけど、ハマさんは日曜日のばんに私をしゅくだいをてつだうから、大じょうぶ。
今日、カンさんとチンさんはエイエフシにおよぎに行きましたから、私は見ました。私はエイエフシでアルバイトをするから、私はよくエイエフシで日本語のクラスのともだちを見る。日本語の一ばんセメスターにエイエフシでさとう先生にあいましたが、私は日本語をはなすのが下手でしたから、先生とあまりはなしませんでした。今はそこで先生をみない。
今ばん、私はエイエフシまで車をうんてんしませんでしたが。それから、あめがふりましたから、私はバスにのりました。でも、私はバスをまっていましたから、水は私のジーンズにはいりました。だから、うちでせんたくしました。
私は今しゅくだいをはじめる。ちょっとおそいね。

日本語のクラス

日本語のクラスはむずかしくて、大へんですね。金曜日のテストはちょっとむすかしいでしたが、だい七かはあまりむずかしくありませんでした。私は今だい八かの文法のシートをしますが、これもとてもむずかしいですよ！
私はすぐとしょかんへ行って、べんきょうをします。私のクラスのリーディングがたくさんありますから、私は毎日いそがしいです！
私はしゅくだいがたくさんありましたが、私はともだちとーしょうにパーティーに行きましたから、こんしゅうまつはたのしくて、おもしろかったです。でも、今しゅくだいがたくさんありますよ。
私はしゅうまつをたにしみにしています。＝）

みなさん！はじめまして！私はジェ二ファー・キムです。私はバージニア大学の二ねんせいで、はたちです。私のせんもんはビジネスです。私はかんこく人ですが、日本語はおもしろいですから、日本語のクラスにいます。私はかんこく語をはなしますが、私はバージニアで生まれましたから、私はぜんぜんかんこくにすみませんでした。私のかぞくはバージニアのシャンティリーにすんでいます。私のかぞくは四人です。父はしんせつで、かっこいいです。父はメカニクですから、くるまのみせにつとめています。母はせがひくくて、やせています。私のいもうとは高校の学生で、たのしいです。私はよくかぞくとあそびますが、私はふゆやすみにとてもいそがしかったですから、かぞくと一しょにあまりあそびませんでした。私はボヌフィシでアルバイトをしましたから、まいばんうちにいませんでしたが、今私はお金がもっています！

This Semester!!

Minasan, I can't believe the semester is almost over. The speech and interview went more smoothly than I anticipated. I thought the speech was a great opportunity to improve our public speaking skills. While skits helped us improve our conversational skills, the speech helped improve fluency and natural flow. It was much easier to be creative because we didn't have to act anything out or incorporate someone else into the speech. It was interesting to see what everyone decided to talk about and I thought it served as a great culmination point for the class. As for the interview, it was really nerve wracking to speak one-on-one to Sato-sensee with Kawai-sensee listening and taking notes in the back. It really didn't seem like I was in there for 15 minutes, probably because I was really nervous and focused on paying attention to everything Sato-sensee said. But again, it was good practice to be put in a situation where we had to talk/respond on the spot. Practicing with Hama-san/ other classmates helped prepare me.

This semester's Japanese class was alot of fun. It was definitely hard work but I think it was worth all the effort. I know that my parents are really impressed with how much I've learned in such a short amount of time. They think it's because I have a knack for languages....but while I love learning new languages, I also think my ability to catch on quickly was in large part due to the structure and material of the class and my classmates too. While there was a lot to absorb every day, I always looked forward to coming to class. Sato-sensee was pretty patient with us I thought and now we've progressed so much. My classmates were/are AMAZING and I probably learned just as much from them as I did in the class. Study sessions at Clemons and lunches were fun of course. I'll miss our class next semester...=( Keep in touch guys...but in the meantime I will see most of you for our last study session on Saturday!

Peer Editing

I thought peer editing was very helpful. I was able to get insight on things that I overlooked and feedback on my speech from different aspects. Some of the feedback I did receive was constructive. It helped me expand more on specific details that I wasn't sure about. I was able to take the speech in a more specific direction and create complex sentences. I also liked giving feedback because I was able to read other people's speeches and get a feel for different writing styles. From that, I got new ideas to help me deviate from just the average to something more memorable.

日本語のクラスはとてもいいクラスですよ。いいせんせいがいますから。でも、日本語のクラスはちょっとむずかしです。さくぶんとスキトもむずかしです。たくさんの時かんぐらいスキトをかきます。でも、スキトはたのしです。十一時のクラスはとてもいいです！みなさんはやさしい人です。それからたのしい人です。よくみなさんといっしょにとしょかんでべんきょうします。私の日本語のクラスがすきです！みなさんもすきです。

私はこんしゅうテストがたくさんありました。水曜日にかんこくのクラスにテストがあります。きょう日本ごのクラスにもテストがあります。だから、こんしゅうはまい日クレモンスとしょかんで五時間ぐらいべんきょうしました。うちであまりねませんでした。火曜日のばんとしょかんでさくぶんをかきました。みなさんと日本ごをべんきょうしました。わたしはそのばんにぜんせんねました。ハマさんとエンシソさんとワシングトンさんもぜんぜんねました。それから、わたしはアルバイトを二時かんしました。それから、日本ごのクラスへいきました。でも、月曜日のばん十二時間ねました。いいばんでした。

きのう日本ごのクラスにスキトがあります。私のパートナーはエンシソさんでした。水曜日のばんエンシソさんのりょうでプラクチィスをたくさんしました。ハマさんとハンさんとタータムさんもプラクティスをしました。みなさんのスキトはいいスキトでしたよね。

私五時にアルバイトを二時間半します。それから、アパートでテレビをみます。グレイスアナトミとオッフィスをみます。いいショウですね。それから十一時にともだちのアパートにパーチがあります。いきます。

あしたもアルバイトをします。それから、かぞくはチャロッツビルへきます。かぞくとばんごはんをたべます。いいしゅうまつです。

What makes a good blog...

BLOGS!
There are several things that make a good blog...
1. It should be in depth, revealing, and preferably interesting
2. It should be personal but also pertain to the object of the blog- which is to communicate (also in Japanese)
3. It should be challenging- You should take risks and talk about what you wanted to say in class but maybe you didn't want to make a mistake
4. It should show what you have learned
5. It should help others learn

This is certainly not an exhaustive list, but I tried to cover the main things that I will try to make my blog emulate...
Feel free to add suggestions.
With that, I leave you with one of my passions...a satirical take on SUSHI!

きのうは木曜日でした。わたしは四時におきました。それから、アルバイト（AFC)へいきました。それから、ごせん九時にレリジョンクラスにいきました。テストがありました。それから、十一時に日本ごのクラスへもいきました。十二時ごろニュコでみなさんとひるごはんをたべました。いいでしたよ。それから、八時かんぐらいホムウアクをしました。それから、グーチで四時かんぐらいエンシソさんと日本ごのスキトをかきました。わたしはごぜん二時にうちへかえりました。それから、ごぜん五時にねました。
きょうは十時におきます。^-^
Yes, yesterday was a very long day...
Enciso-san and I worked to the wee hours in the darkened halls of Gooch. I also saw Tatum-san as I was walking to her room!
I am looking forward to this weekend! It's gross outside right now so i probably won't go out but being lazy is always good... You can find me on my couch.

Thursday nite at Clemons with minasan

I have been at Clemons since 9:00 with my classmates. I have to say we have spent most of the time talking instead of studying. I got more work done when they left for half and hour to get food than the 3 hours we sat at the table. Oh well...
This week's skit was def a source of stress for me. Tatum san and I didn't get a chance to study so we stumbled through the skit a bit but we did our best nonetheless. Skits are always hard because you have to be creative and challenge the materials learned. I find that making everything flow is the hardest part. It all looks great on paper but saying it aloud is a whole different story..
Tomorrow is the Chapter 3 test! Minasan, good luck. I shall study more. Jaa matta.

It's Friday!! I'm excited to drive back home today after classes. I haven't packed anything I have to take home yet but I guess it's fine..
So I take back some things that I thought when we started だい３か。Verbs aren't that bad. It's much more entertaining now that we can actually says things about our lives! I still need a little more work on is the particle は. I've been trying to incorporate it more in the things I say in class, but then again these things never happen when you're trying to think quickly.
I think the work for the class has been increasing, but as time consuming as learning Japanese is, I'm getting a lot out of it. More so than I thought I would. And class is interesting as well as my classmates who are ridiculous!

I hope everyone enjoyed our presentation yesterday. I learned a lot researching dating culture in Japan. I would think that blind dating in groups would be more intimidating than just meeting someone one on one. Because then you're potentially competing for one guy in particular but other people are watching how you are acting and twisted interest triangles make it hard to talk to the person you're interested in.
Also, I found it very interesting that texting plays a role in dating. It's a big strange that girls will text a message for their friend to read on their phone and then show it to them under the table but will not actually send the message. So much discretion for a date- albeit a group date!

だい３か！！！
かんじ scares me...haha. I'm gonna have to work really hard to understand this chapter. It's getting really tough! I'm looking forward to learning everything but getting there isn't going to be easy. Verbs! Enough said.

On the other hand, ぶんかのプレゼンテーションamuse me to no end. Speaking of which, オムラリエブさんand I are next so get excited! I've learned so many things about Japanese culture already. It's made me really want to study abroad there....and eat すし...all the time.

Ahh! Another week has passed...and I am overwhelmed as ever. So much to do and so little time to get it all done...Japanese requires so much work that I almost neglect my other classes. Yet, as much as I study, I get really frustrated when it comes to vocab/katakana/dictations, especially on quizzes when I continue to BLANK OUT! I always feel I know it so well the night before but then my brain decides to go into a coma.

But...I have to say Japanese nevertheless intrigues me. i have found that already several Japanese words that we have learned sound similar to Korean words...such as かばん(bag) is "kabang" in Korean, and しんぶん(newspaper) is "shinmun" in Korean...and also としょかん(library) is "dosokwan." So these aspects definitely help me remember vocab and such. I started learning Hiragana in the summer from my friend who's a first year now (only for a day, haha, then I got lazy) and he taught me the character sounds in relation to Korean vowel and consonant sounds, which are a lot closer to the Japanese sounds than the phonetic Americanized version written. But I've found that even those sounds are not exactly how you pronounce them in Japanese. One point that still confuses me is "ふ." I learned it as "hu" but in the book it says "fu" and sometimes it sounds like Sato sensee uses them interchangeably. If anyone can shed light on that, I'd be much appreciated.
So I've decided that knowing Korean helps a lot in learning Japanese, but not thatt much (unfortunately). Kudos to those who've never learned a non-romance language and take this class.

On a separate note...
Btw, sorry エンシソさんand ハマさんabout not being able to join the Japanese study session...

Things I'm dreading: all in one day next week: にほんごのテスト, comm テスト、and stat テスト。Hopefully, good things come in threes??

Tonight, I told myself I'd go to sleep at ごごじゅうじ　but clearly that hasn't happened. Thursdays are the worst because I have to work at ごせんごじ。Yet I manage to stay up and write this blog..

I just looked at what I've typed and I really hope I can get to the point where I can say more in Japanese- as of now, the Japanese characters are obviously sparse.

Well, the first blog post...what to say...

I don't really know what I was thinking when I decided to take this class. I really just went out on a whim. I don't need this class for my foreign language requirement but I thought it'd be interesting/challenging to learn another language. That being said, I can't believe how quickly we're learning materials, and now that the chapter 1 test is over with, I'm really nervous about all the stuff we have yet to learn. Compared to come people in the class, I feel like I'm really behind even though we're just getting started! This class takes a lot of effort. But I think it will be worth it.

Other than that,
I'm looking forward to this weekend...Today I got up at ごえん４：３０ for work at the AFC. So I'm pretty tired..But if you like to work out early, you'll probably see me there on Thursdays.
